Life After the Civil War Activity

(4.4) History. The student understands the political, economic and social changes in Texas during the last half of the 19th century.

The student is expected to:

A. Describe the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Texas.

Specifically:

· Abolition
· African Americans
· Civil War
· Mexican Texans in the Civil War
· Reconstruction
· Buffalo Soldiers

ACTIVITY:

The student will prepare a short story describing the role of African Americans and Mexican Americans in Texas during the period immediately following the Civil War. Using the "Compare/Contrast Worksheet," have students fill in the sections under Mexican Americans and African Americans with their experiences in Texas history just after the Civil War until the beginning of the 20th century. Then, have students compare and contrast the experience of each group in the appropriate section in the middle column.

This assignment could coincide with Black History Month in February or Hispanic Heritage Month in September.
